Firefox 3 6 3 7 speed
Firefox 3 6 3 7 speed
I just run the Sunspider Javascript test on Firefox 3.5.5 (latest stable version), 3.6 Beta 4 and 3.7 pre-Alpha.
The results will vary depending on your PC specifications and Operating System.
Mine was a Pentium Dual-Core 3.2 GHz with 2Gb Ram, running Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 1 "Lucid Lynx" from a Live-USB.
So, the results were:
Firefox 3.5.5: 2306.4ms
Firefox 3.6b4: 2052.8ms
Firefox 3.7pre-a1: 1609.8ms
Well done Mozilla. That represents about 40% increase in Javascript speed. And what about competitive browsers?
Chrome 4.0.249.30 (beta): 812.0 ms
Opera 10.10: 7249.2ms
Well, not so well done I guess...But until Chrome gets 1/10th of Firefoxs add-ons, I cant consider it as my first choice. Opera was inexplicably slow, maybe it has something to do with the Alpha version of Ubuntu... But Opera was the amazing feature of being a web server at the same time, which means you can stream your music from it, host your chat room or show your photos to your friends. Firefox is still my browser of choice because of the add-ons and I use Opera when I need this functionality. I hope Firefox and Chrome will release an edition with a built-in server in the feature.

Firefox Add ons Snaplinks and Linkification
Firefox Add ons Snaplinks and Linkification
Two reccommended add-ons for your Firefox!
Snap Links allows users to easily open multiple links in new tabs by drawing a box around them. Links can also be opened in new windows, new tabs on a new window, copied to clipboard, bookmarked or downloaded. I mostly use it to (lazily) open multiple links into new tabs or as a replacement for a standard procedure: right click - open link in New Tab.
snap links screen shotLinkification on the other hand, is a very simple yet useful add-ons. It converts text links into a genuine, clickable links. No more copy and paste to the address bar! I found it works perfectly with snap links...
Open this (Snap Links) and this (Linkification) if you are interested.

Careful Firefox observers will notice that the browser no longer ships with a separate icon for Safe Mode. Simply hold down Shift; when you click on the Firefox icon to open a box, you will be allowed to customize which settings carry over to Safe Mode.
Firefox automatically installs a Windows 7 Taskbar icon if you choose it as your default browser. Uninstal the browser does not leave behind any icons or folders if you choose to remove your settings at the same time.

Download Firefox 4.0 Beta 9 in Your Language [via The Mozilla Blog]
This beta version of Firefox 4 browser from the Ubuntu Mozilla PPA is compatible with the following versions of Ubuntu linux:
- Ubuntu 10.10 Maveric Meerkat
- Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
- Ubunty 9.10 Karmic Koala
How to Install?
Step 1:
Setup the Mozilla - Ubuntu daily PPA and update your package list using the following command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa && sudo apt-get updateStep 2:
After the repository gets updated, you can install Firefox-4.0 on your Ubuntu system using the following command:
sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0/usr/bin/firefox-4.0However, it may be possible that after you try to launch Firefox-4.0 from the command line, what actually gets launched is the Firefox 3.6. This is a simple symbolic links issue and you can fix it by using this command:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/firefox-4.0b6pre/firefox-4.0 /usr/bin/firefox-4.0Please not that at the time of writing this article, Firefox 4.0 is a Beta 6 release so the corresponding folder name: firefox-4.0b6pre. So in case you get an error while running this command, just repace the folder name with the appropriate folder corresponding to the newer version.
