First Look Jökulsárlón
First Look Jökulsárlón

I like to reserve the term "magical" for only truly spectacular people, places, or things. Outside of my beloved Walt Disney World, Ive probably only used the term a handful of times. Having said that, my wedding was pretty magical and our first look was no exception. Originally we were planning on getting married Thursday so I could carry my dress around and take photos in front of all the places we planned to visit. Mother Nature can be cruel sometimes though and we ended up having to push the wedding back, which meant Id be heading to Jökulsárlón without a dress. After talking it over a bit with B, we decided to pack it along anyway-- you know-- just in case. I think we made the right decision. Photos by Violet Short.

The drive to Jökulsárlón was a lot longer than anyone could have guessed. (Thanks a lot, Google maps.) Out little caravan had to to stop and ask for directions to a gas station and while we were there, it started POURING. Not only that but it was cold, we were all kinda jet laggy, and I was pretty moody, and it was getting dark rather quickly. Since we had been driving for such a long time with no sign of it in sight, I almost made the mistake of throwing in the towel and saying "lets just go home!" After some backseat persuasion, I decided to keep on truckin. Not more than three minutes down the road, we saw the top of that bridge. Finally! SOMETHING. When we got over the bridge, everyone in the car (and the other car as well, Im sure) audibly gasped. Jökulsárlón looks beautiful in these photos but they truly do it no justice.

After seeing how stunning the lagoon was, I decided that even in the whipping wind, the sharp rain, and numbing cold, I had to put on my dress. After all, when were me, B, my wedding dress, and this lagoon going to be in the same place again? More than likely, never. I fetched my dress from the other car while my family headed up a hill to explore and give us some privacy. Changing out of soaking wet jeans and into a wedding dress in the back of a tiny Citroën is one of the more difficult things Ive had to do in my relatively short life. At that point, I just wanted to get outside. I knew my makeup was going to be obliterated so I decided against a quick touchup. Same with my hair. I didnt feel very cute but the moment I tapped B on the shoulder and he turned around, I felt like the most beautiful girl in the world. (Yes, even in my Doc Martens.) Ill just let those photos speak for themselves.

It was cold. BOY, it was COLD but now that we have these amazing photographs, it was worth it. In some of them, you can see how hard it was raining. You can also tell by how wet my hair is as the photos go on. Still, no regrets. Its our version of that iconic rain kiss from The Notebook. (Or just the cover photo of any Nicolas Sparks novel.)

Its hard to tell just how gigantic those floating bits of glacier really are but trust me: theyre massive and completely breathtaking. The cerulean color of the water was also so stunning. It tinted everything a beautiful shade of blue.

Until next time,
xo, e.m.

Five Ideas For Large Scale DIY Art That Dont Look DIYd
Five Ideas For Large Scale DIY Art That Dont Look DIYd

If you caught my last post about my thrifted china cabinet makeover, you might have read that Im in the market for some large scale art to flank either side of it. In an effort to keep costs down, Im strongly considering DIYing a couple of pieces. I find that if youre purchasing art, most large scale stuff is either a) expensive if its original work or b) cheesy if its inexpensive. (Those two are the extremes of course - I know theres some great, reasonably priced large scale art out there.)
DIY art, on the other hand, can be more wallet-friendly, but I find that the problem with DIYing art is that it often looks DIYd - do you know what I mean? (Hint: not the good kind of DIY.) It can be challenging to make it look really good - at least, thats my opinion.
There IS hope though!
I found some really great examples of large scale DIY art that I think most anybody can recreate and can be confident that it will look awesome. Ive split them up into five categories and have an example or two of each to give you (and myself) some inspiration. Lets get to it!
ABSTRACTS:
Oh abstracts - how tricky you can be! I painted one thats currently hanging in our living room and am pretty happy with the way it turned out. Im no artist - I just experimented until it looked the way I wanted it. Id like to try my hand again soon! There are many, many kinds of abstract art that range from very simple (like the brushstroke art below) to more complex (like the series of three below). Try your hand at both!Simple Example | Francois et Moi

| {Dans Le Townhouse} |
ENGINEERING PRINTS:
Engineering prints are simply large scale copies printed economically on lower quality paper (think blueprints). Black and white ones are super inexpensive, but color ones are also available and are pretty affordable considering the size (the example below was $23). You can have these printed at office supply stores like Staples and then frame them (or dont - your choice!). If youre in the market for a simple, large frame, try the RIBBA from IKEA.Black and White Example | House By Hoff

FRAMED WALLPAPER OR GIFT WRAP:
There are so many beautiful wallpapers and gift wraps out there these days. Wallpapers can get pricey, but you can search Etsy for remnants that are much more affordable. Wrapping paper on the other hand is more budget-friendly, and its easy to find in small sheets from places like Paper Source and Rifle Paper Co.Example | Nalles House

SCULPTURAL WALL HANGING:
The Nester has a fantastic step-by-step tutorial showing you how to make one of these, which starts as - youll never guess - a mop as its base!| {The Nester} |
OVERSIZED TYPOGRAPHY:
If you have Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, or just good handwriting you can do this! Choose your favorite phrase, type it out and have it printed at your local copy place, or write it straight onto a canvas. My best advice? Keep it simple for the biggest impact.Example | The Hunted Interior
Kristen purchased this print with the iconic phrase from Gone With The Wind from Letters on Love (a shop that doesnt seem to exist anymore, unfortunately!), but you could certainly recreate something like this yourself.

| {Refinery29} |
Well! My creative wheels are definitely spinning now with all this research Ive done, and Im thinking it might be time to create something for my dining room. How about you? Are you ready to make some art? Do you have other DIY ideas you think I should try?
