First 5 Minutes of Class
First 5 Minutes of Class
What do you do with the first 5 minutes of class?

James M. Lang, professor of English and director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption College, in Worcester, Mass., suggests that by making some small changes, we can grab students attention right away.
Here are a couple of changes he outlines in a recent essay for the Chronicle of Higher Education.
- Start class with an interesting and important question about the material you are going cover and let students try to answer it.
- Ask students to review what they learned in the previous class. Lang believes that by reactivating what they learned, students will be better prepared for the next lesson. You can write the key points on the board as students volunteer responses.
- Activate students prior knowledge from other courses. Lang says that this is a good way to deal with preconceptions.
Lang suggests that students might write answers to the previous questions. He believes that frequent low stakes writing like this can increase learning.
Professor Lang has also written a book about testing and cheating as well articles about it, which you can see here.

First trip to the ER
First trip to the ER
Well, it turns out my last post was posted too soon! That very same day, guess whos fever shot up again.
Guess whos headache was so bad that he cried out in pain at the sunshine.
And guess whos neck was so stiff that he couldnt move it AT ALL.
Mommy called the doctor and the doctor said... "bring him into the ER right now. Were going to have to do a spinal tap to test for meningitis."
So thats what this mommy did. I called some people, packed some bags, and put my hotter-than-hot, sicker-than-sick boy into the car and drove to the ER.
Guess who wasnt sick at all 2 hours later, when the doctor came into the room?
Thats right, I said, "wasnt sick at all." No fever, no headache, no sore throat, no stiff neck.
"I promise," I told the doctor, "he was REALLY sick before we got here..." She said its happened before.
I think God answered some prayers and healed this sick boy, because the doctor checked him over, kept him a little white for observation, and decided that no spinal tap would be needed! In fact, the only pain Kade had to go through was a tiny finger prick to test for mono- negative, of course!
Somebodys watchin over this kid!

First Grade Dolch Words Packet Plus a HUGE Salee!
First Grade Dolch Words Packet Plus a HUGE Salee!
Happy Sunday!
Ahhhh finally got to finish my. I have been working on this since April and with all my wedding craziness just didnt have time.
My First Grade Dolch Sight Word Mats

So excited to share this with you all. I plan on doing the bundles for K 2nd and 3rd grade in the future. Had to do the first packet for my firsties! This packet is just like my Sassy Sight Words. Its perfect for center work, buddy work, early finishers and homework. I did this last year with my little ones and the students I tutored always asked for it. It was fun to see them enjoy it so much.
Here are some snap shots of whats inside!

If you notice there is not cutting involved. I wanted to make this clean and organized. I know when my students cut, most of them do a great job but you always have some students who are losing letters or important parts to make their classwork complete. So I figured it would be easier for my little ones to manage and less of me picking up!
All these mats have the same format:
color, write, rainbow write, how many syllables, word search and write & draw!
These are all fun short activities for the firsties to use when being introduced or reviewing a sight word.

You can grab this bundle over at my TpT !
If you do grab it let me know what you think.

First Artificial Cell May Provide Souce of Algal Fuel
First Artificial Cell May Provide Souce of Algal Fuel
In the latest issue of "Chemistry World" is a report describing "the first synthetic cell". What has in fact been done is to insert a chemically synthesised genome into a bacterial cell. The M.mycoides genome contains over a million letters of genetic code and current DNA-technology can string-together perhaps a few thousand units in one go. The team led by Dan Gibson and Craig Venter have exploited the ability of yeast to join together small pieces of DNA using enzymes.
Grown in a Petri-dish the synthetic bacterium looks almost identical to the natural version and can similarly self-replicate. For the development of tailor-made life, it is necessary to understand what each gene codes for. The longer-run might be that genomes could be designed, but achieving that is some way off. It is more probable that a simple artificial genome could be created that has the essential properties of a living organism.
This could permit other gene-circuits being introduced for example to produce biofuels or fine-chemicals. Dr Venters company, Synthetic Genomics, intends to use the cell synthesis technology to produce modified algae cells from which to make biofuel. The aim is to make a complete algal genome from which "superproductive organisms" could be derived.
It is possible that the designer method can overcome some of the drawbacks involved with making fuel from algae, namely robustness and competitiveness of particular strains over other organisms, enhanced growth rate and yields of algal oil. The method might be the key to the widescale production of fuel from algae, which is thought to be the better option over making it from land-based crops such as soya and corn, since the yields are much greater and there is no competition with food-crop production, and provide a real alternative to a globalised world that is utterly dependent on supplies of imported crude oil.
Algae also offer the potential of aiding in the curbing of CO2 emissions from power stations and cement factories, and in cleaning nitrates and phosphates from agricultural runoff water and effluent from sewage plants, while simultaneously furnishing useful fuels such as biodiesel and ethanol according to how the algae are processed.

First week of SPRING!
First week of SPRING!
Well, its been almost 10 days since I last posted. That is entirely too long! Here are some little tidbits on my life:
- My husband is now the proud owner of a Wii! I wasnt too excited about getting it, but I have to admit... the first night we had it, I stayed up til 3am playing Lego Star Wars. Making all the Miis was a lot of fun, and even K was excited to play. He is really good at the boxing (which is almost like working out!), and he giggles the whole time. I can tell Im going to have to set a daily time limit on this or hell want to play it all the time! I am really, REALLY good at bowling... which is odd, since my average score at *real life* bowling is about 60. Oh well, Ill take it! :) I havent played Nintendo for a billion years. I used to LOVE it... all the good old games like Zelda, Turbo Challenge, Mario Kart, and Donkey Kong.
I think some of these games are downloadable on the Wii. Just what we need, something else to keep us indoors! Dont worry, I set limits that many children and husbands would claim were unfair. And, the Wii is on my side. It suggests quite often to take a 15 minute break and head outdoors. They do care!
- It is Spring already, even tho the weather might not be cooperating. The days are getting longer, the chance of snow is still there but I can see a glimmer of hope that one day it will be warm enough to go outside in shorts and a t-shirt again! Fall is my favorite season, but Spring comes in a close second. It is just so nice to get out of the dreariness of Winter. Here are some pictures of some beautiful flowers from my sister:
Coincidentally, today is National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day!!! Those are one of my very favorite indulgences, so I think I will have to celebrate.
- I have been working on some wallets (both girly and guy types), business card organizers and holders, needles and pins keepers, and some other fun things. Once I get my designs down, I will start listing some on Etsy! I also just finished a new design for my BusyFingers BabyBuddies. He is the green dino, and he is so cute:
It is so incredibly exciting for me to see my little business start to grow! My things are being featured in more treasuries, and one of my sock monkeys is even on the first page of the Childrens Gift Guide!! I also got my first potential wholesale order! All of this makes me so happy, because being with my son and crafting are two things that are very important to me! It is great to see that it might be possible to stay at home and earn a little bit of money at the same time.

First Look Jökulsárlón
First Look Jökulsárlón

I like to reserve the term "magical" for only truly spectacular people, places, or things. Outside of my beloved Walt Disney World, Ive probably only used the term a handful of times. Having said that, my wedding was pretty magical and our first look was no exception. Originally we were planning on getting married Thursday so I could carry my dress around and take photos in front of all the places we planned to visit. Mother Nature can be cruel sometimes though and we ended up having to push the wedding back, which meant Id be heading to Jökulsárlón without a dress. After talking it over a bit with B, we decided to pack it along anyway-- you know-- just in case. I think we made the right decision. Photos by Violet Short.

The drive to Jökulsárlón was a lot longer than anyone could have guessed. (Thanks a lot, Google maps.) Out little caravan had to to stop and ask for directions to a gas station and while we were there, it started POURING. Not only that but it was cold, we were all kinda jet laggy, and I was pretty moody, and it was getting dark rather quickly. Since we had been driving for such a long time with no sign of it in sight, I almost made the mistake of throwing in the towel and saying "lets just go home!" After some backseat persuasion, I decided to keep on truckin. Not more than three minutes down the road, we saw the top of that bridge. Finally! SOMETHING. When we got over the bridge, everyone in the car (and the other car as well, Im sure) audibly gasped. Jökulsárlón looks beautiful in these photos but they truly do it no justice.

After seeing how stunning the lagoon was, I decided that even in the whipping wind, the sharp rain, and numbing cold, I had to put on my dress. After all, when were me, B, my wedding dress, and this lagoon going to be in the same place again? More than likely, never. I fetched my dress from the other car while my family headed up a hill to explore and give us some privacy. Changing out of soaking wet jeans and into a wedding dress in the back of a tiny Citroën is one of the more difficult things Ive had to do in my relatively short life. At that point, I just wanted to get outside. I knew my makeup was going to be obliterated so I decided against a quick touchup. Same with my hair. I didnt feel very cute but the moment I tapped B on the shoulder and he turned around, I felt like the most beautiful girl in the world. (Yes, even in my Doc Martens.) Ill just let those photos speak for themselves.

It was cold. BOY, it was COLD but now that we have these amazing photographs, it was worth it. In some of them, you can see how hard it was raining. You can also tell by how wet my hair is as the photos go on. Still, no regrets. Its our version of that iconic rain kiss from The Notebook. (Or just the cover photo of any Nicolas Sparks novel.)

Its hard to tell just how gigantic those floating bits of glacier really are but trust me: theyre massive and completely breathtaking. The cerulean color of the water was also so stunning. It tinted everything a beautiful shade of blue.

Until next time,
xo, e.m.
