Five Years Ago Today I Started This Blog and now a soppy post ensues

Five Years Ago Today I Started This Blog and now a soppy post ensues

So here we are, at the five year anniversary of this little corner of the web. It is weird to think of this time five years ago where I would have been furiously tapping away at the big keys of my Dads desktop PC to create my paragraph-long thinkpiece on Let the Right One In. Okay, so thinkpiece is a loose term for this very vague review. The ironic thing is, I wrote that review in my first year of high school. Just recently, I wrote an essay on the same film for my first year of university (which got an A, so apparently Im smart). So whys this important?

Usually, Id have some post to celebrate an anniversary with all of these thank yous and lists of movies that have meant a lot during the years. And believe me, Ive thought about this five year anniversary and what Id do for it for the last couple of years. But Ive said it before, and Ill say it again: this blog has been a great way to track the way Ive grown up. Through my changing movie tastes (hello not watching Hannah Montana: The Movie for fun) to the way my writing has developed to how my life went through all of these strange milestones. It was great for those formative high school years, figuring out all those weird questions of "who am I, what am I doing, what will I choose as my career when I cant even decide to have for breakfast this morning?"

Admittedly, this year has been a strange one where everything has changed in so many ways. Gone are the days of having to go 45 minutes to get to a cinema and instead Ive been to the cinemas 37 times this year (so almost once a week). Ive gone from only ever living in three different houses in my life to living in four different places in one year. Ive learnt about the perils of referencing (cant we all just use one referencing style instead of jamming MLA, Harvard, APA and Chicago into one semester?!), how to put up with constant abuse from the engineers about the fact that my Arts degree will not get me a job, the weird feeling of being in a relationship with someone who is too good to be true. So while my blog has been the perfect thing through a whole lot of transitions, it hasnt been all that present this year as Ive been making some of the biggest transitions in my life.

And believe me, it isnt like I havent tried. Ive written so many drafts for posts and just got to the point where it no longer makes sense, so I delete it. I would love to throw my hat into the rather expansive ring of thinkpieces about Gone Girl, but a) Id just be fangirling over how perfect Rosamund Pike was and how David Finchers direction was ON POINT, b) Im still feeling guilty over dragging my boyfriend to see it twice and c) theres so much discussion on it, where do I even begin? I would love to tell yall about how my life did not turn out like Before Sunrise or The Spectacular Now (actually, it kinda did...). I would love to write another post on how much I love Shame or how much I want Interstellar to be in my life right now or how much The Equalizer rubbed me up the wrong way.

Problem is, I dont. Ill always look back to posts I wrote in 2011/2012 and most likely think "damn, I was such a good writer, what happened?" Thing is, Im not the same person I was back then. The blogging world is not the same sanctuary it was then. I used to be very clear about what I wanted this blog to be like when I wasnt so sure of what I wanted to do with my own life. Ive kinda lost that now.

This makes it sound like I will finally cut the cords on this wee high school project, but thats something I dont really wish to do. Especially considering my degree is really all about writing and Im happiest when Im writing, this is a good little haven to come back to. It just might be that Im ready to take a new direction and stop wishing that I could be at the same stage of blogging that I have been through the past five years. Yes, it is a great thing that I have an online record of how much Ive changed throughout the years. And yes, it is a great thing that I managed to (loosely) keep up with it for five whole years. So even though this seems like Im moving on, lets just see it as moving forward.

(allow for soppy story to ensue)

Through going to the cinemas so many times this year, it has easily become my absolute favourite thing to do. I admit to still looking up at the light coming from the projector like I used to do as a kid, loving the waft of buttery popcorn smell you get as you come up the escalator, and being so comfortable in the warmth of the glow from the screen. Ive seen some bad films this year, and Ive seen some great ones (behold the wonder that is Boyhood), but no matter what film it is, I always love this stuff. Especially having someone to share it with now. And something that Ive found while being at university is that passion does matter and passion is the only thing thatll get you through. So of course, Id hate to lose this little corner of the internet that allows to me to express my passion. Ive been kind of awful at it in the last few months, and I may continue to be awful at it, but Ill still be here in some small way.

So finally, Id like to thank the people who have come and gone or stayed at some stage through the past five years. It has been a great time growing up with you guys, and I look forward to sharing some more thinklings and discussions with you.

And if I dont, someone just kick me up the butt for some encouragement, huh?

Winter is back, and its colder than any time in recent memory. Combined with snow, dry air, ailment, and everything else that accompanies winter, its turning out to be entirely unpleasant. Here are 7 ways to keep yourself healthy amid this somber season.

Set the thermostat wisely:

You might be enticed to wrench up the thermostat in the winter season, however this can be exorbitant—and superfluously so! A programmable (or even smart) thermostat can help a great deal, yet you can likewise drop your thermostat continuously to help you get used to marginally colder temperatures. In case youre in a hotel, this trap will help you abrogate the thermostats implicit breaking points, as well. Ensure your house isnt really spilling heat.

Stay away from dry eyes, static shocks and skin:

Icy temperatures and frigid climate may appear as though winters greatest killjoys, yet the dry air can likewise bring about loads of disturbances. Your skin and eyes will likely be a considerable measure drier in the winter months, so ensure you take additional care of them. Conceal your face and eyes, utilize a decent cream, and get a decent humidifier if your home is feeling somewhat dry. It ought to likewise help with those static shocks, as well.

Plan a vacation:

The most evident guidance is if its excessively cold where you live, go elsewhere. So why not take somewhat off-season get-away? Warming up yourself is more effective than warming your entire home (particularly in the event that you live alone). Set up your body for winter, close any unused rooms, and consider a space warmer (like this one) to spare a little on warming expenses. Its stunning what a decent combine of socks or shoes will do.

Maintain heat inside your home:

However, heat costs money, so ensure you arent squandering it on warmth that is getting away through the cracks. Check the most well-known spots heat is getting away, and protect them in the event that you can (even air pocket wrap will work). Run your roof fans clockwise to keep the warmth coursing descending, and take out drafts to continue everything decent and toasty.

Stay healthy:

Stay away from winter blues:

Winter isnt precisely the most joyful of seasons, whether you experience the ill effects of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or not. Concentrate on all the positive things about winter to get yourself psyched, and drench up as much regular daylight as you can. Ensure you take additional special care on the off chance that you telecommute which can exacerbate winters discouraging impacts even worse.

Flashback This is Showbusiness Kid!

Flashback This is Showbusiness Kid!

So, I just reread this post, first published on 27 January last year, and I thought it was funny. I am in a bad mood, have a sucky headache and a pile of crappy life weighing me down, so I needed a laugh... is it self involved that I make myself laugh with posts about me? Perhaps. Whatevs.

So, here is a little flashback to January last year, and then to the late eighties. Youre welcome. :-)

This is showbusiness, kid!

Palmwoods Hall- home of The Palmwoods Players
When I was younger, my sisters and I (including my extra-sister Angela) were part of our local theatre company The Palmwoods Players. The first show I remember being in was Peter Pan. I played Wendys daughter. I think my character was made up. But I had a kick ass yellow sleeping bonnet thing that my mum made me. I think I was about 9 at the time. I thought I was the shit.

Now, my sister Jodi was Peter. She was the star. Angela was Tinkerbell. My other sister Debbie was one of the Lost Boys. She had to wear a fern hat thing on her head and the girl playing her twin had really stinky breath. I dont think she has ever recovered, but that is her story. This is mine.

So, Jodi was often the star of the Palmwoods Players. She was (and still is) very pretty and a very good singer. I was always cool with that. "My sisters kind of a big deal" and all that.

When I was about 12, The Players were putting on Jack and the Beanstalk. I decided that I was totally going to get the role of the Princess. (Is there a princess in Jack and the Beanstalk? Another made up character!) I figured I was getting older, I could sing, I was Jodi and Debbies sister- I was totally due a good part! I was awesome!

So, we all auditioned. The night that the parts were being announced, I was nervous, but I was also confident. It was my turn. I had nailed the audition (I assume. I have no actual memory of the auditions whatsoever)

Mike and Muriel (the funny old couple who ran Palmwoods Players, and who were responsible for all the made up characters) started announcing the cast.
"Jack will be played by... Jodi!"
YAY!!

"The Queen will be played by... Debbie!"
YAY! Hang on... I dont remember there being a Queen in Jack and the Beanstalk either! What the hell?

"The Giant will be played by... some dude!"
( I cant remember his name. But he had red hair. And he was tall. Talk about type casting.)

"The Princess will be played by..... Whatever-her-name-was!"
NOOOO! Id missed out on the part to some girl! I was super disappointed, but I thought, Hey, surely Ill get one of the other decent supporting roles. Wont I? Im awesome, remember?

So this went on for a while.. The villagers, Jacks Dad, sundry other extras, whatever.
And my name still hadnt been called yet.

By this time, there are only a two people left in the place who dont have parts.
Me and Stinky Breath.
Mike says, "And the role of the front of the cow will be played by..... Stinky Breath."
My mind is screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Muriel says, "And finally, the role of the BACK of the cow will be played by... Gillian!!!

I beg your pardon, Muriel, I thought you said,
YOU ARE MAKING ME THE BACK OF THE FRICKIN COW!!!!!
This is me and my family around this time. I am the uncomfortable looking one with the large bosoms. I am a self conscious, twelve year old girl, whos two sisters are playing starring roles. And I am the back of a cow. This is totally not going to mess me up psychologically AT ALL.

Muriel sees that I am not peeing my pants with joy and she says, "Dont worry Gilly, you are also the understudy for the front of the cow if Stinky Breath cant do it.
WELL, SHIT MURIEL! WHY DIDNT YOU SAY SO!!!! BRING IT ON.

I remember oh so vividly, the shame and embarrassment of bending over and holding onto Stinkys waist under the musty blanket we used as our cow hide.

Unfortunately, the show never made it to the stage. (Theatre critics around the world were devastated.) I cant remember why. Perhaps Mike and Muriel were sued by the creators of all the musicals they cavalierly added characters to over the years.  Eliza Doolittles gay brother Donny was the straw that broke the fake cows back.

My lovely Mum did however, make the most gorgeous cow costume for me and Stinky Breath. I actually kept the head of the cow for years. I even took it with me when I left home.

Maybe as a reminder that if you are too cocky and arrogant, you may just end up being a big cows arse.

On a related, weirdly morbid note, when I was in Year Eleven in High School, I played the mayor of a German Town in a crap vampire musical. My character was called The Burgher. (German mayors are called Burghers. Youre welcome)
I think the girl who was making my costume didnt like me, because my costume included a hamburger bun hat and a lettuce tie. The hat had sesame seeds.
Mine wasnt this cool.
In 5 years I had gone from cow to hamburger. And I STILL WASNT THE FRICKIN STAR!!!

Were you in local theatre as a child? Have you ever played an embarrassing role in a play? Or just in your lounge room?

Five cool ornaments on this years tree!

Five cool ornaments on this years tree!

Halloween might be long gone but theres nothing stoppin ya from letting horror seep into the Christmas season.  Today were going to take a look at a handful of ornaments featuring zombies, monsters, and bounty hunters that happen to currently be hanging from my Christmas tree.

First up is my latest addition, Freddy In Spaces Return of the Living Dead ornament!  Available for one short day this little collectible is a thing of beauty and currently my favorite ornament.  Im sure this one will manage to hang around past the Holiday.

Not quite as horrific, but I couldnt do this post without showing my beloved Boba Fett ornament.  This was the very first Hallmark ornament I remember owning.  My Grandmother was a huge collector so Im sure she was very pleased that Hallmark was releasing something that would help her Grandson get reeled into the craze.

I had to turn the flash on for this one as he was doing a superb job of hiding.  Hallmarks 2014 Xenomorph release might be one of their most detailed ornament.  Everything about this is perfect.

Words cannot describe how excited I was to finally receive the 2014 Frankensteins monster ornament.  If you havent picked up this one you should head to your nearest Hallmark store and rectify that issue.  The likeness to Karloff is spot on.

This 2013 release managed to slip past me, I was sure to fix that this year.  As if having a mini Jabba the Hutt hanging from your tree wasnt enough, this one actually talks.

The last ornament Ill show is the Great White Menace ornament, another great ornament from Hallmarks 2014 offerings.  Not only does this one look creepy with those dead black eyes, with a push of the button you can hear the Jaws theme.

Im sure youre wondering whos keeping all of these fearsome ornaments in line?  Its not me, I actually have The Creature sitting on the top of my tree keeping everything in check.
