Five Years Ago Today I Started This Blog and now a soppy post ensues

Five Years Ago Today I Started This Blog and now a soppy post ensues

So here we are, at the five year anniversary of this little corner of the web. It is weird to think of this time five years ago where I would have been furiously tapping away at the big keys of my Dads desktop PC to create my paragraph-long thinkpiece on Let the Right One In. Okay, so thinkpiece is a loose term for this very vague review. The ironic thing is, I wrote that review in my first year of high school. Just recently, I wrote an essay on the same film for my first year of university (which got an A, so apparently Im smart). So whys this important?

Usually, Id have some post to celebrate an anniversary with all of these thank yous and lists of movies that have meant a lot during the years. And believe me, Ive thought about this five year anniversary and what Id do for it for the last couple of years. But Ive said it before, and Ill say it again: this blog has been a great way to track the way Ive grown up. Through my changing movie tastes (hello not watching Hannah Montana: The Movie for fun) to the way my writing has developed to how my life went through all of these strange milestones. It was great for those formative high school years, figuring out all those weird questions of "who am I, what am I doing, what will I choose as my career when I cant even decide to have for breakfast this morning?"

Admittedly, this year has been a strange one where everything has changed in so many ways. Gone are the days of having to go 45 minutes to get to a cinema and instead Ive been to the cinemas 37 times this year (so almost once a week). Ive gone from only ever living in three different houses in my life to living in four different places in one year. Ive learnt about the perils of referencing (cant we all just use one referencing style instead of jamming MLA, Harvard, APA and Chicago into one semester?!), how to put up with constant abuse from the engineers about the fact that my Arts degree will not get me a job, the weird feeling of being in a relationship with someone who is too good to be true. So while my blog has been the perfect thing through a whole lot of transitions, it hasnt been all that present this year as Ive been making some of the biggest transitions in my life.

And believe me, it isnt like I havent tried. Ive written so many drafts for posts and just got to the point where it no longer makes sense, so I delete it. I would love to throw my hat into the rather expansive ring of thinkpieces about Gone Girl, but a) Id just be fangirling over how perfect Rosamund Pike was and how David Finchers direction was ON POINT, b) Im still feeling guilty over dragging my boyfriend to see it twice and c) theres so much discussion on it, where do I even begin? I would love to tell yall about how my life did not turn out like Before Sunrise or The Spectacular Now (actually, it kinda did...). I would love to write another post on how much I love Shame or how much I want Interstellar to be in my life right now or how much The Equalizer rubbed me up the wrong way.

Problem is, I dont. Ill always look back to posts I wrote in 2011/2012 and most likely think "damn, I was such a good writer, what happened?" Thing is, Im not the same person I was back then. The blogging world is not the same sanctuary it was then. I used to be very clear about what I wanted this blog to be like when I wasnt so sure of what I wanted to do with my own life. Ive kinda lost that now.

This makes it sound like I will finally cut the cords on this wee high school project, but thats something I dont really wish to do. Especially considering my degree is really all about writing and Im happiest when Im writing, this is a good little haven to come back to. It just might be that Im ready to take a new direction and stop wishing that I could be at the same stage of blogging that I have been through the past five years. Yes, it is a great thing that I have an online record of how much Ive changed throughout the years. And yes, it is a great thing that I managed to (loosely) keep up with it for five whole years. So even though this seems like Im moving on, lets just see it as moving forward.

(allow for soppy story to ensue)

Through going to the cinemas so many times this year, it has easily become my absolute favourite thing to do. I admit to still looking up at the light coming from the projector like I used to do as a kid, loving the waft of buttery popcorn smell you get as you come up the escalator, and being so comfortable in the warmth of the glow from the screen. Ive seen some bad films this year, and Ive seen some great ones (behold the wonder that is Boyhood), but no matter what film it is, I always love this stuff. Especially having someone to share it with now. And something that Ive found while being at university is that passion does matter and passion is the only thing thatll get you through. So of course, Id hate to lose this little corner of the internet that allows to me to express my passion. Ive been kind of awful at it in the last few months, and I may continue to be awful at it, but Ill still be here in some small way.

So finally, Id like to thank the people who have come and gone or stayed at some stage through the past five years. It has been a great time growing up with you guys, and I look forward to sharing some more thinklings and discussions with you.

And if I dont, someone just kick me up the butt for some encouragement, huh?

Five Years after the Financial Meltdown The State of the US Economy and College Grads

Five Years after the Financial Meltdown The State of the US Economy and College Grads

The LA Times has provided a good detailed analysis of where we stand five years after the fiscal meltdown of 2008. The overall takeaway is that the richer are getting richer, and almost everyone else is suffering.  One important point is how much wealth and employment was lost during the Great Recession: “Over 19 months, the Great Recession erased trillions of dollars of wealth, destroyed 8 million jobs and robbed tens of thousands of their homes. More than half of adults lost a job or saw a cut in pay or hours, and almost everybodys wealth fell.” This incredible loss of wealth and income has been followed by an uneven recovery: although household net worth has increased to a record $81.7 trillion, this wealth has not been shared evenly.

One reason why the rich have gotten richer is that after the last stock market dive, people with extra cash were able to re-invest in stocks: the result is that “household assets in equities have more than doubled since 2008 to $20.6 trillion earlier this year.”  In fact, the wealthy have profited from the financial crisis: “Moreover, for the wealthy, a downturn or a slow recovery can provide advantages: With real interest rates near zero, the price of assets — investment property, securities, luxury goods and so forth — remains relatively cheap.”  Thus, as everyone saw their income and wealth decreased, if not wiped out, the rich were able to buy low and sell high.

In terms of employment, all of the jobs that were lost during the Great Recession have returned, but they are different jobs:  “As of May, total employment in construction and manufacturing, where pay is relatively high, was down more than 3 million compared with before the recession. By contrast, restaurants, temporary help firms and retail outlets have added 3 million jobs, making them three of the fastest-hiring industries during the recovery. But their average hourly pay ranges from $12.35 for restaurants to $16.96 for retail, compared with $24.72 for manufacturing and $26.59 for construction.” In what is now called the polarized economy, there has been some job growth at the top, but most of the new jobs are low-paying service work.  As middle-class jobs are eliminated, middle-income families are still recovering from a loss of over two trillion dollars in home equity.  The end result is that the median household net worth is now lower than what it was in the late 1990s.

For recent college graduates, the news is ever worse: “Underemployment has become a vexing problem. Four out of 10 recent college graduates have jobs that typically do not require a bachelors degree, and many of the positions dont pay much. And the job market is a lot worse for those without a bachelors degree.”  If we add together the underemployment and employment rates for recent college graduates, it is now over 50%, and of course, these young people hold a high level of student debt: “The college class of 2014 is the most indebted ever, keeping many from going out on their own and helping boost a shortage of first-time home buyers.”  In other words, student debt is depressing the economy, which then reduces job opportunities in a vicious cycle.
On the same day the LA Times article appeared, a story in The New YorkTimes Magazine, further documented the plight of recent college graduates: “The problem for college graduates began well before the Great Recession, around 2000, as employment demand stirred by the computer revolution started to wane. Specifically, theres evidence of sharply curtailed opportunities for people in so-called cognitive-task occupations, those typically associated with college graduates.” While we continue to hear stories about the need for more college graduates, especially in the STEM areas, the reality is that these jobs make up less than 5% of the labor market, and the wages in these areas have been driven down by the high number of applicants for each job.
As young people find themselves facing low-paying jobs and high debt repayments, they have been forced to delay their lives and return back to their parents: “One in five people in their 20s and early 30s is currently living with his or her parents. And 60 percent of all young adults receive financial support from them. That’s a significant increase from a generation ago, when only one in 10 young adults moved back home and few received financial support. The common explanation for the shift is that people born in the late 1980s and early 1990s came of age amid several unfortunate and overlapping economic trends. Those who graduated college as the housing market and financial system were imploding faced the highest debt burden of any graduating class in history. Nearly 45 percent of 25-year-olds, for instance, have outstanding loans, with an average debt above $20,000.”  As more college graduates rely on their parents to support them, we have to ask what happens to the young people who do not have parents with extra resources.

As several economists have shown, if you have the bad luck of graduating college during an economic downturn, your entire life can be affected: “And more than half of recent college graduates are unemployed or underemployed, meaning they make substandard wages in jobs that don’t require a college degree. According to Lisa B. Kahn, an economist at Yale University, the negative impact of graduating into a recession never fully disappears. Even 20 years later, the people who graduated into the recession of the early ’80s were making substantially less money than people lucky enough to have graduated a few years afterward, when the economy was booming.” Adding insult to injury, the people who will suffer a life of lower income will also be the ones having to pay back the most amount of debt.

Adam Davidson argues that the reason for this crisis stems from political and economic decisions made over the last 34 years: “Since 1980, the U.S. economy has been destabilized by a series of systemic changes — the growth of foreign trade, rapid advances in technology, changes to the tax code, among others — that have affected all workers but particularly those just embarking on their careers.”  Like so many journalists and economists, Davidson does not mention de-unionization, financialization, and profit-hording.  The fact is that corporations continue to make huge profits, but nothing is forcing them to share their wealth with labor.   Meanwhile, the entire economy is rigged to make the wealthy wealthier.

In a typical analysis of what has happened to the American worker since 1978, Davidson refuses to look at the loss of labor power and ascendency of management power: “But we now know that, during the ’70s, this system was becoming unhinged. Computer technology and global trade forced manual laborers to compete with machines at home and with low-wage workers in other countries. The changes first affected blue-collar workers, but many white-collar workers performing routine tasks, like office support or drafting or bookkeeping, were also seeing their job prospects truncated. At the same time, these developments were hugely beneficial to elite earners, who now had access to a larger, global market and productivity-enhancing technology. They were assisted by changes in government policy — taxes were cut, welfare programs were eliminated — that further rewarded the wealthy and removed support for the poor.”  Yes, the welfare state has been reduced through tax cuts and anti-government politics, but businesses embraced an intentional strategy of destroying labor power and increasing profits at the top.  In contrast, in Northern Europe, where most of the workers are unionized and participate in workplace decision-making, high economic productivity has been combined with low-income inequality and fortified social programs.  There are simply better and fairer ways of doing things.

Finally finished only 3 years late!

Finally finished only 3 years late!

Three years ago, Kade asked me for a sock lion for his birthday. That was his favorite animal at the time, and his favorite color was yellow. I bought some cute yellow socks, cut and sewed them up, and set them in my bin full of projects I needed to finish. And there they stayed, getting covered up with more and more unfinished projects.

Kade asked me about his sock lion the other day, and I immediately felt so guilty! Ive made close to a hundred sock creatures in the last three years, plus countless other stuffed animals and other things. But I forgot about his little sock lion. I cant believe Kade didnt forget about it too, since its been so long!

In a way, Im glad I made this lion now instead of three years ago. I dont think it would have turned out looking anything like a lion back then, when I was just getting the hang of sock monkeys! Im pretty happy with how it turned out. It took hours to hand tie each hair of his mane to his head, but it was worth it!

Now, three years later, Kades favorite animals are turtles. His favorite color is "all the colors but pink!". But I think he will still love his finished sock lion that I will give him as part of his Easter basket. Better late than never, right?

Still to do in my huge pile of halfway done projects-
~King size jean quilt
~Three sock monkeys
~Owl purse
~Two fabric first name puzzles
~A few pairs of baby booties
~A summer shirt for me
~A wallet for Jer

....plus more! Am I the only one who has this problem? Its a personal goal of mine to start finishing all the things Ive started, to make way for new things. I *love* getting something done and checking it off my mental list. Im not going to procrastinate any more. This yellow lion is the first of many, and Im so excited to move on to the next!!

***Just thought I would add the link to the tutorial I used, years ago, to learn how to make sock monkeys! They are easy, and with just the basic sock monkey form you can also make lions like mine, cats, dogs, bunnies, monsters, and lots of other things! There are also lots of other sock creature tutorials out there if you just search for them. I highly recommend it, they are so fun to make!***

Five cool ornaments on this years tree!

Five cool ornaments on this years tree!

Halloween might be long gone but theres nothing stoppin ya from letting horror seep into the Christmas season.  Today were going to take a look at a handful of ornaments featuring zombies, monsters, and bounty hunters that happen to currently be hanging from my Christmas tree.

First up is my latest addition, Freddy In Spaces Return of the Living Dead ornament!  Available for one short day this little collectible is a thing of beauty and currently my favorite ornament.  Im sure this one will manage to hang around past the Holiday.

Not quite as horrific, but I couldnt do this post without showing my beloved Boba Fett ornament.  This was the very first Hallmark ornament I remember owning.  My Grandmother was a huge collector so Im sure she was very pleased that Hallmark was releasing something that would help her Grandson get reeled into the craze.

I had to turn the flash on for this one as he was doing a superb job of hiding.  Hallmarks 2014 Xenomorph release might be one of their most detailed ornament.  Everything about this is perfect.

Words cannot describe how excited I was to finally receive the 2014 Frankensteins monster ornament.  If you havent picked up this one you should head to your nearest Hallmark store and rectify that issue.  The likeness to Karloff is spot on.

This 2013 release managed to slip past me, I was sure to fix that this year.  As if having a mini Jabba the Hutt hanging from your tree wasnt enough, this one actually talks.

The last ornament Ill show is the Great White Menace ornament, another great ornament from Hallmarks 2014 offerings.  Not only does this one look creepy with those dead black eyes, with a push of the button you can hear the Jaws theme.

Im sure youre wondering whos keeping all of these fearsome ornaments in line?  Its not me, I actually have The Creature sitting on the top of my tree keeping everything in check.
